The Library at the Sindh Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Karachi

INTRODUCTION OF LIBRARY

The Library was founded in 2007, when the Sindh Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation itself came into being. The Library has a collection of more than 1,400 books for Medical and Allied Health Sciences and the large number of bound volumes of research materials.

SERVICES:

This library provides reference & information services, reading room facilities and circulation services with the help of the latest books, research materials, literature indices and other forms of informative material. The Internet Lab consists of 25 computers and remains fully occupied and open during office hours for faculty, students and researchers.

PRESERVATION AND RETRIEVAL OF MATERIAL: 

All books and materials are preserved in a systematic order according to cataloguing code and NLM classification (National Library of Medicine). KOHA Integrated Library Management Software has been adopted for development of an online DATA Base. A complete computerized system is under process. Link for an online library catalogue will be provided soon with membership cards

VISION:

The staff of the library strives for the highest quality services as they enhance access to the knowledge base of the health sciences, instruct users in information retrieval and management techniques, and acquire and organize a specialized collection of electronic, print and other resources in a cost-effective manner. 

MISSION:

We support the information needs of the faculty, staff, and students of the Institute by selecting, acquiring, and delivering information and by collaborating, educating, and building community.

We accomplish this mission by:

  1. Supporting the academic goals and research activities of every student, staff, faculty member and researcher through services and resources to foster learning and intellectual growing.
  2. Procuring high quality resources and tools that support clinical care, population health and research.
  3. Following innovation and enhancement of librarian and staff skills and services through education, training and job enrichment and by harnessing new technology.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To develop a comprehensive collection policy on current and retrospective medical literature and other resources.
  2. To provide access to information in any format (print and electronic form) to support the curricula and research needs of the Institute.
  3. As primary information provider, it serves as leader in procuring, evaluating and applying technology for managing and providing information.
  4. It provides support for personnel training and development within the scope of the changing technological environment.

GOALS:

  1. The library is a welcoming and well-maintained space for our Institute.
  2. Students, Faculty, Scholars, Clinicians, and Researchers have access to the resources they need.
  3. Library web sites together form a uniform, welcoming, easy to use and well-maintained research launch site, marketing mechanism for services, and support zone for our user community.
  4. Students, faculty, scholars, clinicians, and researchers have access to ample synchronous and asynchronous teaching and training opportunities and research services.
  5. Library users and patrons are informed of library resources and services.
  6. Library faculty and staff are comfortable in their knowledge of interdepartmental functions and processes.
