Up till now, more than 20,000 people have benefited from appliances provided by the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics.

Prosthetics and Orthotics is a dynamic and expanding allied health sciences profession. Technically, Prosthetics and Orthotics are separate disciplines, but their common goal in rehabilitation is to unite them into one cooperative entity. The major difference between orthotics and prosthetics is that while an orthotic device is used to enhance a person’s limb, a prosthetic device is used to replace a limb entirely.

Orthotics are commonly prescribed to people who have difficulty using their arms or legs due to deficiencies or deformities, Orthotic devices enhance function, provide comfort and healing to the limb by reducing shock, and decrease inflammation and swelling.

Prosthetics involves the study of artificial limbs with a unique combination of appropriate materials, alignment, design, and construction to match the functional needs of an individual. A prosthesis is an artificial limb prescribed by a prosthetist to replace a limb on a person’s body.
